BlurPoint blurs, pixelates or covers faces, text and anything else that should not leave your phone. Everything runs on your device. This page covers the questions we get most often; if yours is not here, email blurpoint@koud.fi.

Quick start

  1. Open BlurPoint and tap Select Photo, or Take Photo to use the camera. You can also share a photo or screenshot to BlurPoint from any app (see “Redact from the share sheet”).
  2. Pick a tool at the bottom: Circle, Rectangle or Freeform. Draw on the photo where you want the effect.
  3. Choose an effect and adjust its intensity.
  4. Tap Export, then Save to Photos or Share.

Each drawn shape becomes part of a mask. Masks are listed above the tools; tap one to select it, drag its handles to move or resize it.

Free and Pro

What is free? Circle, rectangle and freeform regions with no limit on how many you draw, the Gaussian blur and Pixelate effects, soft edges on every region, background blur with either of those effects, adjustable intensity, undo and redo, and unlimited full-resolution exports with no watermark. Nothing in Free is ever limited.

What does Pro add? Automatic detection of faces and text, all 10 effects (Gaussian, Box, Motion and Zoom blur; Pixelate, Crystallize, Hex and Pointillize distortion; Color Block and Noise Pattern), background blur with any effect, and the Brush, Linear Gradient and Radial Gradient tools with Add, Subtract and Intersect operations.

How much is Pro? Pro is a subscription: $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year, shown in your local currency in the App Store. The annual plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Both plans unlock the same features.

Detection

How does face and text detection work? Open the detection menu in the editor and choose Detect Faces, Detect Text or Detect All. BlurPoint analyses the photo on your device with Apple’s Vision framework and shows each face and text block it finds as a suggestion. Accept or reject them one at a time, or tap Accept All. Accepted suggestions become components of a mask you can edit like any other. Nothing is uploaded; detection works in Airplane Mode.

Can I tune detection? Yes. In Settings > Detection (also reachable from the editor) you can turn each detection type on or off, set its sensitivity, and choose whether adjacent text is merged into one region. Higher sensitivity finds more items but may include false positives.

It missed a face or text. Raise the sensitivity for that type and run detection again, or draw the region by hand. Small, blurry or heavily angled faces are the hardest cases. Detection requires Pro; drawing by hand is always free.

What is Background Blur? Turn on Background Blur and BlurPoint finds the main subject of the photo and applies the effect to everything around it. It is free with Gaussian and Pixelate and needs Pro with the other effects. It works best on photos with a clear subject, such as a person or pet in the foreground.

Editing masks

How do I change a region after drawing it? Tap it to select it. Drag inside to move it, drag the handles to resize it, and change the effect or intensity for the selected mask. Every change can be undone.

How do I lock a mask? Long-press the mask chip above the tools and choose Lock, or use the lock button in the mask list. A locked mask cannot be moved, resized, edited or deleted until you unlock it the same way. Lock masks you are happy with so later strokes cannot disturb them.

Can one mask hold several shapes? Yes. With a mask selected, new shapes, brush strokes and detections are added to it. Each mask has one effect, so use separate masks when you want different effects.

What do Brush and the gradients do? (Pro) The Brush paints a mask freehand with adjustable size, hardness and flow. Linear Gradient fades the effect across the photo from one edge; Radial Gradient fades it outward from a point. Each component has an operation: Add grows the mask, Subtract cuts out of it, Intersect keeps only the overlap. A common combination is Detect Faces, then Subtract a circle over your own face.

Can I hide a mask temporarily? Yes. Long-press its chip and choose Hide, or tap the eye icon in the mask list. Hidden masks are not applied to the preview or the export.

Can I start over? The Clear All button removes every mask. Undo brings them back.

Exporting

Which formats can I export? HEIC, JPEG or PNG. HEIC and JPEG have a quality slider; PNG is lossless. The export is always at the full resolution of the photo you opened. Photos larger than 50 megapixels are reduced on import, and the app tells you when that happens.

What happens to location and other metadata? By default BlurPoint removes all of it: camera, date, location and every other EXIF, GPS, TIFF and IPTC block. Blurring a face and then leaving the GPS position in the file defeats the point. If you do want to keep the original metadata, turn off Remove location and metadata in the export sheet. The choice is remembered.

Where do exported photos go? Save to Photos puts the result in a “BlurPoint” album in your photo library. Share opens the iOS share sheet so you can send the file to any app without saving it first.

Is blur secure enough for sensitive content? Blur and pixelate can sometimes be partly reversed. For anything sensitive, use the Color effect, which covers the area with a solid block, or Noise Pattern. The app shows this reminder once, the first time you export a blur or pixelate mask.

Redact from the share sheet

How do I use BlurPoint from another app? BlurPoint is a share extension, so you can redact a photo or screenshot without leaving the app you are in. Tap Share on the image, then tap BlurPoint in the row of apps. The first time, it may be hidden: scroll the app row to the end, tap More, then Edit, and enable BlurPoint (you can also add it to Favorites so it stays in view). A compact editor opens with the same tools, effects, undo and redo as the app.

How do I get the result out? Save to Photos writes the redacted image to your library, into the BlurPoint album. Done hands the image back to the app you shared from; apps that accept an edited image (many messaging and mail apps) receive it directly, while some, including Photos itself, ignore returned images, so use Save to Photos there. Cancel discards everything.

What is different in the extension? Extensions have a tight memory limit, so photos above 12 megapixels are reduced for editing (the app allows 50), and there is no mask list, background blur or export sheet. A shared PNG comes back as PNG; anything else is exported as HEIC, or JPEG on devices without HEIC. Location and metadata are always removed. Detection uses the same settings as the app.

Can I use Pro features in the extension? Yes, if you have subscribed in the main app. The extension cannot sell or restore a subscription; tapping a Pro tool without Pro shows a note pointing you to the app. Buy or restore there, then return to the share sheet.

Subscription

How do I restore Pro on a new device? Open Settings in BlurPoint and tap Restore Purchases. Pro is tied to the Apple Account that bought it, so make sure you are signed in with the same account.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription? In BlurPoint, open Settings and tap Manage Subscription, or go to iOS Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions. Cancelling stops renewal; Pro stays active until the end of the current period. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid being charged for the next one.

How do I get a refund? Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple Account and choose the BlurPoint Pro purchase. Apple decides refund requests and we cannot see or change the outcome.

I paid but Pro is not active. Tap Restore Purchases in Settings. If it still does not activate, check that the subscription is listed under iOS Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions, then email us with the approximate purchase date. Do not send receipts or payment details.

Privacy

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere? No. BlurPoint makes no network requests. Photos are opened, edited and exported entirely on your device, and detection runs on the device too. You can use the app in Airplane Mode.

Does BlurPoint collect analytics or crash reports? No. There is no analytics or crash-reporting software in the app.

How do I delete my data? BlurPoint keeps no data about you. The only things it stores are your detection and export settings, on your device (detection settings in an App Group container shared with the share extension); deleting the app removes them all. Photos you exported are in your photo library and under your control.

Troubleshooting

The app is slow or runs out of memory on a large photo. Close other apps and try again. Photos above 50 megapixels are reduced on import so the editor stays responsive.

Save to Photos fails. Check that BlurPoint is allowed to add to your photo library in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos, and that the device has free storage. Sharing to another app works without that permission.

A Pro tool shows a paywall even though I subscribed. Tap Restore Purchases in Settings, then try again.
